BlackBerry Still Holds Vast Majority of US Government Smartphone Share
BlackBerry 7 Family Part 2
In case this was not obvious its worth reiterating now that even the Washington Post has seen the light and noticed the US government does not care if you can play Angry Birds on your work smartphone. They confirmed once again that the lion share of smartphones issued by the US government are BlackBerrys with over half a million of them. That number also has not dipped in the past few years. Casey Coleman, CIO of the General Services Administration, also notes that they “appreciate RIM’s focus on security.” He said that of the 12,000 devices issued by the GSA the “vast majority” are BlackBerrys.
RIM has always had a strangle hold on the secure smartphone market for ages due to their laser focus on security and no nonsense work device options. Other platforms are finally getting to the point where they can try to compete and they will obviously make some headway but RIM is still the top dog in Washington. The thing is that the most common complaint government users have about BlackBerry, subpar web browsing, has been fixed in the latest BlackBerry 7 devices. Hopefully they will get upgrades soon.
The big question is how BlackBerry 10 will change the game… Thanks Bill for sending this in!
